This class was an eye opener. Each verse is dense with wisdom and through I have been trying to study the Yoga Sutras by myself for years; it was not until a master teacher like Acharya Shunya went deep into the important verses, and unpacked the wisdom, did the meanings really hit me, in a profound sense.

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra is one piece of a rich tradition that must be conveyed by a qualified teacher, and Acharya Shunya has brought her Advaita Vedanta lineage’s deeper commentary on Raj Yoga to this special teaching series. I highly recommend this class for everyone interested in mental health and well-being. Whether you are a layman or therapist, this class will radically change the way you think and relate to yourself and others. These teachings, incorporated into your life, will make you a better, more functional, happier human being.

I have always wanted to follow the mystical teachings contained in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. I have studied this text at least twice before with different yoga teachers. But this time, it was a whole different experience. To study with a Vedic master, who has grown up with these texts was a completely different experience. I learnt so much more about my own thoughts and why my mind is an obstacle on my path to liberation, and what I can do about it in a very real sense as full time dad, and part time yogi. I loved Acharya Shunya’s intensity as a teacher as well as her sense of humor. I can't recommend this course enough to my Yoga and Ayurveda colleagues.

I am so glad I took this class on Yoga Sutras with Acharya Shunya. I benefited from it much more than what I had expected initially. I thought this was going to be a lot of philosophy, but it was knowledge that I could use in my life, immediately. I learnt how to manage my own emotional suffering. I especially loved knowing about the kleshas which are 5 types of sorrow causing thoughts. Now, when such thoughts arise, I simply tell myself this is a klesha. I feel I am more calm since I took this class.
About The Yoga Sutras by Patanjali

The Yoga Sutras by Patanjali is a great text to explore if you wish to go beyond the physical dimension of yoga, asanas, body poses and stretches. It opens the path to union with something greater within you—your own divine Self, referred to as "Purusha" in yogic terminology, through the path of inner mastery and meditation.
As a text, it is a collection of 196 Sanskrit Sutras (aphorisms) explaining the path of yoga and how to achieve the goal of yoga, which is mastery of the mind and ultimately a no-mind state (samadhi) to achieve union with the "Self" (purusha). The Yoga Sutras serve as the basis of the yoga system known as Raja Yoga, one of the six schools of Hindu Philosophy, which emphasizes the attainment of wisdom which lies beyond the mind and logic, through meditation.
The Yoga Sutras were compiled by a Vedic sage known as Patanjali in 2 BCE. Little is known about Sage Patanjali’s life, and he is the subject of numerous myths and legends. There remains some confusion as to the identity of Sage Patanjali as well as the exact timeframe of his life. Hindus consider him as a minor avatar of Lord Vishnu’s snake "Ananta."
As such, the text does not contain original teachings of Yoga separated from the larger Vedic tradition. It is more of a synthesized and organized version of the existing ancient Vedic knowledge about yoga from existing texts such as The Bhagavad Gita, The Upanishads and texts on Hatha Yoga. However, it is such an excellent and precise compilation with truly beautiful insights by Sage Patanjali that this text stands out in its own category.
